chalmers_c_logo1On 10 November 2017, Minshu Xie from Microtechnology and Nanoscience and one of the researchers in the MEG project, will be presenting his master thesis with the title “Development of high-Tc SQUID magnetometers for on-scalp MEG”. ​Minshu Xie is a PhD student at Quantum Device Physics Laboratory (QDP). Faculty opponent is Associate Professor Lauri Parkkonen, from Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at Aalto University.

fredrik olson_squaredMåndagen den 2 oktober presenterar docent Fredrik Olson från Nordic Health Economics MedTech20©- en ny metod för att mäta och värdera egenskaper hos medicintekniska produkter utifrån patientens perspektiv.

Många medicintekniska produkter förbättrar livskvaliteten och underlättar vardagslivet för patienter på ett sätt som inte kan översättas i kliniska effekter. Samtidigt utgör medicintekniska produkter en allt större del av hälso- och sjukvårdens budget, vilket gör att myndigheter och landsting behöver veta vilket värde dessa produkter har.

Mot denna bakgrund har forskare på Nordic Health Economics i Göteborg utvecklat MedTech20© som ger möjlighet att påvisa patientnyttan av medicintekniska produkter. Resultat från studier med MedTech20© kan användas vid jämförelser mellan olika produkter inom ett visst sjukdomsområde eller mellan olika sjukdomsområden och kan därför användas som underlag till hälsoekonomiska analyser. MedTech20© har tagits fram i bolagets egen forskning, och har bland annat resulterat i en vetenskaplig artikel som publiceras inom kort, (Int J Technol Assess Health Care, in press).

Fredrik Olson, PhD, Ass. Professor, är senior manager inom Health Economics & Outcomes Research på Nordic Health Economics. Företaget ingår i PharmaLex group och är ett konsult-och forskningsbolag inom hälsoekonomi och Real-World-Evidence-studier. Bolaget grundades 2003 och består av 9 personer, varav 7 har akademisk doktorsexamen. Lokalerna ligger i Life Science-klustret på Medicinareberget.

Abstract
In this thesis work, we investigate deep learning methods for medical image analysis and classification. In particular, our studies have been conducted on using a large amount of MR brain images for two diseases: (a) detection of Alzheimer disease (AD); (b) classification of brain tumor, glioma. Our study is focused on employing deep learning methods, more specifically, 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with different architectures, for detection/classification of the above two diseases. The first part of the study is focused on the detection of Alzheimer disease. For our study on AD, MR images were obtained from a public available dataset ADNI. We propose a novel AD detection scheme by employing 3D CNNs with a simple architecture that is effective, after numerous tests. In the scheme, a set of pre-processing on the MR images is also employed, as it is shown to be essential for the detection performance. The proposed scheme has yielded a good performance, with a AD detection rate of 98,7% on the case where training and testing images were randomly partitioned, and 85.7% in the case where training and testing images were partitioned according to subjects. Performance evaluation and comparison were also conducted. The second part of the study is on brain tumor (glioma) classification. We have studied the same deep learning method, 3D CNNs, however, with different architectures for the brain tumors. The dataset is obtained from “MICCAI BRaTS competition 2017” consisting of high-grade glioma (HGG) and low-grade glioma (LGG) MR images. Our preliminary study on classification of low/high grade gliomas has shown promising results with a classification accuracy of 85.96%. Further work is required for a depth study of brain tumor classification.

helen_sandelinTorsdagen den 21 september kommer Helen Sandelin från företaget Mediteq att ge oss en överblick över områdena patientdata och informationssäkerhet.

Hanteringen av patientdata i vården regleras och påverkas av flera olika lagar som de nationella lagarna kring patientdata, personuppgiftslagen och journalföringslagen. 2018 kommer även den Europeiska General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) att börja gälla och påverka hanteringen av patientdata. Det innebär i korthet att alla organisationer som hanterar persondata behöver göra det på ett kontrollerat sätt, vilket bl.a kan inkludera ledningssystem och riskhantering. Vad innebär det för aktörerna inom vården – patienter, vårdpersonal samt tillverkare och leverantörer av IT-system och teknisk utrustning? Den 5 september anordnade Mediteq Forum en temadag inom området, och du kommer under detta lunchföredrag att få en summering av föredragen och paneldebatten från denna dag.

MedTech West lunch seminar with Prof. Jie Yang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University

yang1On Thursday 7 September, Prof. Jie Yang, Inst. for Image Processing and Pattern Recognition at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China will be giving a lunch seminar at MTW with the title “Recent Research on Two Applications of Medical Image Analysis: (a) Diabetic Retinopathy in Fundus Images; (b) Spiking neural network models for obstacle avoidance in simulated prosthetic vision”.

In the first part, we address the issue related to diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy has a serious complication that may lead to retina damage. We propose a local connectedness constraint and contrast normalization-based framework for micro-aneurysm detection, and a gradual removal of vascular branch-based framework for hemorrhage detection, and a dual-scale morphological segmentation-based framework for exudate detection. An assisted-diagnosis system for diabetic retinopathy is realized.

In the 2nd part of the presentation, we address a research issue related to prosthetic vision. The implementation of artificial human vision has long been proposed to provide restored vision for blind individuals. In recent years, electronic visual prosthesis has been developing rapidly as an encouraging neuro-engineering field to restore functional vision for the profoundly blind. We present a NeuCube-based obstacle avoidance system that may result in high classification result. The proposed NeuCube system has a spiking neural network architecture, which provides a useful obstacle avoidance for the blind in prosthetic vision. Unlike existing image processing strategy in prosthetic vision that only supplies enhanced phosphenes for the blind to fulfill the object recognition themselves, the proposed NeuCube-based obstacle avoidance system is shown to outputs the existing classification results.

Prof. Jie Yang received BSc degree in Automatic Control and MSc degree in Pattern Recognition & Intelligent System both from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), and PhD degree at Department of Computer Science, University of Hamburg (Germany). He has been a full Professor and Director of Institute of Image Processing and Pattern recognition at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is the principal investigator of more than 30 national and ministry scientific research projects in image processing, pattern recognition, data mining, and artificial intelligence, including two national 973 research plan projects, three national 863 research plan projects, four National Nature Foundation projects, six international cooperative projects with France, Sweden, Korea, Japan, New Zealand. He has published 5 books,more than 500 articles in national and international academic journals and conferences. He has supervised 5 postdoctoral, 36 doctors and 66 masters, being awarded 6 research achievement prizes from The Ministry of Education in China and Shanghai municipality. One Ph.D. dissertation he supervised was evaluated as the “National Best Ph.D. Dissertation” in 2009. Two Ph.D. dissertations he supervised were evaluated as “Shanghai Best Ph.D. Dissertation” in 2009 and 2010 respectively. He has also owned 32 patents.

WiSE seminar with Anna Carlsson

AnnaK_inbjWiSE welcomes Anna Carlsson from CIT (Chalmers Industriteknik) to present at the very first lunch seminar of this term.

Before joining Chalmers Industriteknik Anna completed her doctoral thesis ‘Addressing Female Whiplash Injury Protection’ in 2012 at the Department of Applied Mechanics at Chalmers. Her doctoral thesis addresses different types of whiplash protection solutions for men and women. Anna will present her thesis as well as the female crash dummy which she has developed. She will also present more recent research, for example the SAFER project “Evaluation of a test method simulating a pedestrian hip impact” carried out earlier this year. Anna will also discuss different aspects and her experiences of being a researcher linking industry and academia. As usual, you will be able to ask questions after the presentation.
