Smart Textiles

Smart textiles are textile materials and products that interact with users and/or the environment. Our focus is on textile based sensors made of conductive fibers incorporated in clothing to record electrical activity from the heart (ECG), brain (EEG), or muscles (EMG). Incorporating smart textile sensors in regular clothing is paramount for long term or distance monitoring, e.g. in home care settings. 

3D Weaving

The emerging field of smart textiles can contribute new solutions to a wide range of healthcare problems. Regardless the application, the “smart” fiber, yarn, or fabric needs to be integrated in a textile product. MedTech West takes part in the development of a new weaving technique which can combine different “smart” textile characteristics in three dimensional structures.  

The opportunity to use different materials and weave them into three-dimensional structures allows us to manufacture textile products characterized not only by the qualities contributed by each fiber or yarn, but also by the way they are weaved together in a three dimensional structure. This way,  key aspects in medicine such as cooling, heating, venting, draining or moisture keeping can be enhanced by a certain textile structure. Our first application is to weave bands of textile electrodes for recordings of electrophysiological signals that will not only be easier to use, especially in multi-channel recordings, but also will be more comfortable to wear in long-term recordings of ECG, EEG, or EMG. EBI

Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI) Technology it is currently use for non-invasive assessment of body fluid distribution, The current approaches most often wrong estimate the amount of intracellular fluid (ICF) and therefore the total value for Total Body Water(TBW) and the percentage contribution of the Extracellular Fluid (ECF) to the TBW.

A more accurate and reliable estimation of the ICW would improve the performance of the EBI method for Body Composition Assessment (BCA) and would enable the spreading of the technological approach as reliable and accurate one. The overall goal of the project is to improve the performance of EBI measurements for BCA. Intermediate goals are to find the pre-processing and analysis techniques with specific robustness to measurement artifacts. To improve find reliable methods for estimating the amount of ICF. EBI Garment

Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI) is the Technology of choice for non-invasive assessment of body fluid distribution, Despite of its widely acceptance among nutrition clinics its performance depends a lot of several factors like the skin-electrode interface. The use of Ag/AgCl electrodes with a reduce contact surface often produces elevated electrode polarization impedances, especially with elder patients that present a non-uniform and flat epidermis. Such combination makes the acquisition of EBI measurements a challenge. EBI measurements taken in this situation most often produces wrong estimation of the fluid distribution parameters.

The main goal is to obtain a more reliable EBI approach enabled by the use of Textile Electrodes (Textrodes). Secondary goals are to facilitate the work related to the acquisition of the EBI measurements and learn how mature is this Textrode approach for its integration in Home Monitoring applications.
