Project description

The Vinnova-funded project ”Online ImageLab” focuses on the area of medical image analysis, to which healthcare is increasingly turning in order to meet challenges in efficiency and quality of care. (See http://www.sectra.com/medical/rheumatology/imagelab).

Many powerful methods and applications are already available, but they rarely reach clinical practice since small specialized tech companies cannot afford to build and maintain a large enough customer base. Healthcare providers, on the other hand, do not have the resources to find, evaluate and introduce such solutions. The conclusion is that a link is missing, that can cost-efficiently connect the different sectors.

This project aims at developing this link: a service platform for medical image analysis based on a centralized online image laboratory – ´ImageLab´. In simplified terms it can be described as an ´AppStore´ for healthcare providers. The analysis services are delivered online through a cloud-based technology platform providing secure, anonymized and efficient data transfer. The customer only needs a single source for a vast range of image analyses, each available in the form of separate apps. The analysis companies on the other hand reach a large number of potential customers through a single installation of their product. ImageLab will help small companies to market their products and support their customers. ImageLab is also designed for clinical validation of research-level methods and for patients to initiate analyses themselves.

During the current second project phase a demonstrator will be developed that will showcase a number of complete chains connecting care provider, ImageLab and analysis provider. The subprojects (first apps) are selected to provide a broad validation of ImageLab. In conclusion, ImageLab aims to broadly enable strong growth for Swedish companies within image analysis, and provide healthcare providers with earlier and easier access to innovative medical solutions.

NOTE: Funding for the development of new image analysis apps that fit the ImageLab platform is available within the project. Sectra Medical Systems (www.sectra.com/medical/) is leading the project.
