Centre for Healthcare Improvement (CHI) at Chalmers – some experiences from process improvement in healthcare

Svante Lifvergren, Co-Director CHI, M.D., Development Director Skaraborg Hospital Group

Andreas Hellström, Co -Director CHI, Ph.D. Senior Lecturer Chalmers

Today’s healthcare faces many challenges. People are getting older, and increasingly more patients suffer from multiple illnesses that require extensive specialist care. At the same time, new and expensive drugs and treatments are introduced at an accelerating rate. These are just a few examples of changes that challenge the whole healthcare system. To meet these challenges, there has been a cry for many years to change the way healthcare is delivered and increase the efficiency of the sector. In this situation there has been a call for a development of new competences from knowledge domains outside the traditional medical discipline. To accomplish change in the healthcare delivery system, it has been argued that traditional “professional knowledge” in healthcare must be complemented by another system of knowledge that they refer to as “improvement knowledge”.

The Centre for Healthcare Improvement (CHI) is a research and education centre at Chalmers University of Technology carrying out research and education within the improvement, innovation and transformation of health care and medical treatment. The Centre is based at the Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers with its expertise within disciplines such as quality sciences, logistics, production planning, innovation and entrepreneurship.

During this seminar we will shortly present CHI, our research, and education. We will then present one of our research projects where we work together with Regional Cancer Centre West with an action research approach aiming for a more patient oriented and integrated cancer care.
