Nick Ashton at London Science Museum
On Saturday 24 March, Nicholas Ashton, postdoc in Michael Schöll´s Research Group, gave a speech at the prestigious London Science Museum as part of the public event “Delve into Dementia”.
Nick´s talk focused on the challenge of diagnosing preclinical Alzheimer’s disease and why it is critical, even when there is currently no cure. He presented advanced brain imaging techniques and biological tests that are used to detect the very earliest changes associated with AD and also how researchers are trying predict the development of brain diseases using a blood test. Research from the last decade has confirmed that the biological process that causes Alzheimer’s disease begins many years before the symptoms occur – this phase is known as “preclinical Alzheimer’s disease”.
